Rodeo Invitational T-Shirt - Black

In American mythology, the cowboy is a white man. But the facts of history tell a different story. Spanish colonizers, building on equestrian knowledge introduced to the Iberian Peninsula by North Africans, brought mounted herding to the New World. The Spanish even introduced their own form of rodeo-charredas to Texas and California. Rodeo competitions would become a staple of cowboy culture.

In the heyday of America’s Old West, roughly a fourth of the cowboys were Black. But today, the world of professional bull riding, a sport rooted in ranching culture, is predominantly white. Neil Holmes and Ezekiel Mitchell are two modern day black bull riders who ride on the PBR tour. There is also an all black tour that has been going strong for 30 years now, fittingly named after Bill Pickett, the greatest black rodeo cowboy ever.
